This week our teams were involved in a National Safety Stand Down for Fall protection awareness.

According to OSHA statistics, fatalities caused by falls remain the leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 378 of the 986 construction fatalities recorded in 2021 (BLS data).

The National Safety Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.

Training was given by 3M who explained fall calculation and proper harness and lanyard inspections. The session included ‘Drop Tests’ which illustrate how impacts from height affect the human body.

“We’re grateful to the team at 3M for their input, and to everyone who attended the training,” said John Benavides, of Renegade Group’s Safety team.

“This is a critical issue for the construction industry. Fatalities from falls are preventable through a strong safety culture based on awareness and compliance. We continue to do everything we can to assure our teams are safe in the field.”

A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. Any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to focus on “Fall Hazards” and reinforcing the importance of “Fall Prevention”. Employers of companies not exposed to fall hazards, can also use this opportunity to have a conversation with employees about the other job hazards they face, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies and goals. It can also be an opportunity for employees to talk to management about fall and other job hazards they see.
